CAMPUS NEWS ON THE MARCH
By KEVIN SWITZER
Every year since 1973, people from across the nation have gathered in our nation’s capital to protest Roe vs. Wade, the Supreme Court decision that made it illegal for the states to outlaw abortion. This year was no different. On Monday, January 23rd, thirty-seven Abbey students joined tens of thousands of people in the 33rd annual March for Life in Washington, DC.
Along with its undergrads, the Abbey was represented by Fr. Kieran, the school chaplain, Br. Michael, Br. Edward, and campus ministry coordinators Corein Brown and Ruth Payne. The group also had a few guests, including Bill Brown and his wife Cindy, who runs a crisis pregnancy center in Charlotte called “Room at the Inn,” and two high school students.
The group drove up on Sunday morning on a chartered bus and attended the vigil Mass celebrated by the Archbishop of Baltimore Cardinal William Keeler at the National Shrine on Catholic University of America’s campus. Two of our own, Austin Scott and Michael Tracy, joined the liturgy with many others as altar servers.
Abbey president Dr. Thierfelder joined the rest in DC Monday morning, and the whole group marched from the Washington Monument to the top of Capitol Hill. The students carried a sixty foot red and white sign with the college logo and the slogan, “Belmont Abbey College is for Life!” The group also had matching shirts, scarves, and hats similarly adorned with the logo and pro-life slogan.
The trip was made possible by the generosity of Bob and Jackie Gallagher, Connie Keffer, the Monastery and the President’s office.
