DELTA ZETA: LET'S WELCOME A TRADITION

By LOGAN KEETER
September 22, 2006

As Lisa Brown reports in her Sept. 19 article, Greek life at Belmont Abbey College is just one of the many things that draws the young adults and staff to the campus on a personal, intimate level. While our Greek population may be smaller than that of other colleges and universities, the sororities and fraternities at BAC do not let that stand in their way of being social, fun, entertaining and purposeful. It is truly a great chance to find a close group of friends with whom you share common interests, and who have your best intentions at heart. These organizations help you make friendships you can rely on in every aspect of life.

The Abbey has proven to the school, the church, and the community that it is possible for us to grow and flourish as a network. While our school is growing and changes are slowly being made, I think it is important that we all embrace the new and give everything a chance.

My friends and I are very interested in bringing a chapter of Delta Zeta to Belmont Abbey, and are working to make this happen. The most obvious reason might seem to be that it would be a fun, well-known sorority to help give the campus a boost. This is very true, but there are really boundless reasons why this would be a positive addition to the college.

First of all, while we have such a growing number of new students every semester, it would be something they would automatically recognize. Delta Zeta is ranked among the top three sororities with the most college chapters in the United States with 165 chapters, from coast to coast. The networking possibilities are nearly endless! Everyone has an older sister, cousin, friend or other family member that has heard of Delta Zeta and/or been affiliated with the sorority. People are very likely to be familiar with this sorority, and therefore have a home base or foundation when starting school at Belmont Abbey.

Not only would this sorority connect more people to Greek life at Belmont Abbey, it would also support growth everywhere on campus. It shows the community that Belmont Abbey tries new things and has the potential to pick up an idea and run with it. Just like the other greek organizations on campus, Delta Zeta would encourage scholarship, teach responsibility and help us gain individual and social strengths.

A new sorority on campus will give more girls the chance to fit into a group that will help them grow spiritually and intellectually. Maybe they will connect perfectly with Delta Zeta, maybe not. If not, there are other great sororities on campus that will also provide these great attributes to them. I do not think it is too much to ask to give Delta Zeta a chance. It would be yet another organization to distinguish Belmont Abbey College as a place of excellence, virtue, and also opportunity.
