Returning from a recent “Family outing day” sponsored by the Belmont Parks & Recreation Department, youth soccer player Brianna Powell knew exactly what she would wish for this Christmas -- a new soccer ball autographed by Belmont Abbey women’s player, freshman defender Kristin Voirin (#7).

According to Dana Powell, Brianna’s mother, when she saw her daughter’s Christmas list she placed a call to Belmont Abbey College and spoke with Sandy Burris. Burris, who serves as one of the assistant coaches for the team, told Powell she would see if Voirin would be able to come watch Brianna play in an upcoming Belmont Parks & Recreation Department soccer game.

To Brianna’s surprise, on Thursday, Oct 19, 2006, Kristin Voirin did appear for her soccer game, but also brought along junior midfielder Lauren Strebler (#15). Brianna received a personal autographed soccer photo, as well as a soccer jersey signed by the enitre Belmont Abbey Lady Crusaders soccer team. Both Voirin and Strebler energized the sidelines by staying through the game to cheer Brianna and her Belmont Knights team on to victory.

“It was the best feeling a mom could have,” expressed Powell. “These two young ladies made my daughter’s day. They were fans just for her and the smiles never left my child’s face,” rejoiced Powell.

For the past three years, the Belmont Parks & Recreation Department has tied in “Family outing day” in both their soccer and basketball leagues, giving athletes and their family time together to watch their sport played at a higher level at the college. Designated outing dates are organized by the department and approved by Belmont Abbey College.
