Barthold Niebuhr. The Geography of Herodotus. 1830.

Niebuhr (1776-1831) is considered the founder of modern scientific history. His critical examination of original sources and his emphasis on institutions rather than individuals finally separated history from mythology.[PMM] His Roman History (also in Belmont Abbey's Rare Books Collection) is best known and was included in the British Museum/Earl's Court Exhibition. This is a lesser known but uniquely interesting edition of his Dissertation, published by Talboys of Oxford.
