Pierre Bayle. Dictionnaire Historique et Critique. 1739.

This is an English translation of an important predecessor of modern encyclopedias. It became one of the most influential statements of eighteenth-century rationalism, written as an ideaological counterpoint to the Roman Catholic views evident in Moreri's Le Grande Dictionnaire Historique, featured next in this exhibition. Both works had originally appeared late in the previous century, but first editions are rarely the most significant printings of any encyclopedia. Both works were revised and enlarged for decades until being superceded by more modern encyclopedias.[PMM]
