Gabriel Biel. Sacri Canonis Misse Tam Mystica. 1516.
Gabriel Biel, known as the last of the Scholastics, was noted as a preacher in the cathedral of Mainz, and his theological writings were referred to many times in the discussions of the Council of Trent. Martin Luther received his scholastic orientation through Biel. This book on the sacred laws of the mass is bound in calf, with gold stamping on the spine. The type is gothic with an exact style between lettres de forme and ancienne Batarde. The printer, Francoise Regnault, displayed superior craftsmanship during the first part of the sixteenth century, a golden age of French typography. Regnault's elephant colophon is prominent on the title page.[ME]
