Jacob Cats. Buyten Leven op Sorgvliet. 1656

Jacob Cats (1577-1660) was one of five great poets of Holland who together achieved the "golden age" in Netherlandic literature. Cats was a moralist storyteller who combined Calvinistic philosophy with practical wisdom in his iambic poems, which were read in every Dutch family in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. Many Dutch proverbs originate from his works.[NCE] This edition published during his lifetime is lavishly illustrated with macabre motifs influenced by the medieval tradition of the "Dance of Death."
