George Catlin. North American Indians. 1850.

Catlin (1796-1872) was an American painter and traveler, whose writings and engravings present an eyewitness record of Native American life in North and South America. In the 1830's he spent considerable time among the tribes of the Plains and of the Northwest. Catlin published a number of volumes about his travels, illustrating them with engravings from his own remarkable sketches and paintings. This edition, interestingly, was published in London, indicating the extent of interest abroad in the American frontier, prompted in part by Catlin's tour of Europe in 1839.[EA]
