Comtesse de La Fayette. La Princesse de Cleves. 1725.
Though she wrote other books, Madame de La Fayette is remembered best for this novel of thwarted love set in the court of Henry II. During its composition the novel was discussed and critiqued by the brilliant men and women who attended the salon over which the Comtesse presided, some of whom could remember the period in which the novel is set. Among the characters is Mary Queen of Scots, who was also Queen of France after the death of Henry II. This edition was published in Paris in 1725 by the Compagnie des Libraires Associez. The book has never been out of print, and remained a popular favorite through the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.[ME]
