Punch, the British magazine of humor and satire, began publication in 1841. Its inspiration was the French magazine Charivari, and the full title is Punch, or the London Charivari. The magazine featured humorous and satirical articles, poems, and cartoons. It has generally been on the liberal side of issues, aiming its most telling barbs at the government, clergy, and other members of the Establishment. Punch has had a distinguished roster of authors and illustrators, including Thackeray, Hood, Sir John Tenniel, and George du Maurier. The United States was not beyond its purview, as shown by the cartoon below lampooning the then-contemporary President, Abraham Lincoln.
