The author, acting in the capacity as army correspondent for the New York Herald, joined General Sherman's army at Chattanooga in March 1864. He served as volunteer aid-de-camp as well as correspondent. He attempted to gain accurate information by personal observation and by sharing the hardships of the camp, the fatigues of the march, and perils of the battlefield.[ME]
